Thuringia

The fast middle

Thuringia is located in the centre of Germany and borders five other federal states: Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Bavaria and Hesse.

Arrival by car:

Over the highways ...

  • A4 (East-West connection: Dresden - Frankfurt)
  • A9 (North-South connection: Berlin - Munich)
  • A38 (Southern Harz motorway)
  • A71 (Schweinfurt/Würzburg - Sangerhausen)
  • A73 (Nuremberg - Suhl)

.... the federal state and many of its regions are easily accessible by car.

Arrival by train:

Since December 2017, Thuringia has been the fast-moving centre of Germany. The main railway station of the state capital Erfurt is since then the ICE hub for the new high-speed lines: Berlin - Munich and Frankfurt - Dresden. The travel times from these metropolises to Erfurt are thus reduced to an average of two hours.

In order to make travel planning easier for travellers with mobility problems, Deutsche Bahn has set up a mobility service centre.
It ...

  • advises people with disabilities personally
  • provides valuable tips and advice for travel
  • organizes a personal boarding, transfer and departure service
  • Reserve wheelchair spaces and seats for disabled passengers and their companions
  • sells tickets that can be either sent out or left for collection at the new ticket vending machines
  • also offers travel information that is specifically geared to the needs of disabled people, such as the choice of direct connections

DB Courier luggage

Travellers who want to travel without large luggage are particularly well served by courier luggage. For this reason, the railway offers a door-to-door service for suitcases and special luggage such as bicycles or medical chairs. Tickets and further information on the courier baggage service can be obtained at all DB travel centres and DB agencies, as well as on www.bahn.de.
