Out in the Thuringian Forest
Family weekend in Bad Liebenstein
Friday
After arriving by train, bus, or your own automobile, the pleasant personnel of the centrally located Hotel Herzog Georg will greet you. Your barrier-free apartment provides ample space for the entire family. You will then have dinner together in the big restaurant, which serves regional specialties from the Thuringian Forest.
In the evenings, take a short tour through the Neuer Kurpark or through the city centre to the so-called Brunnentempel.
Saturday
Bad Liebenstein has a lot to offer, so a visit to the tourist information center is the perfect way to begin an exciting weekend. The ground-floor rooms with comfy chairs allow you to look through the brochures. The staff are happy to share insider insights and assist you in booking events. Whether you're looking for tickets to the Comedy House or the Altensteiner Cave, you'll find them all here. Not to mention the loan of the explorer backpack, which will be utilized for tomorrow's trip to Altenstein Castle and Park, guaranteeing fun for the little ones.
Right after that, you will enjoy an unforgettable experience: a guided tour of the Altensteiner Cave, complete with corridors, halls, and a music gallery. A standout feature is the so-called "3D mapping," which casts virtual worlds onto cave walls. Beginning in December 2023, the Altenstein cave will be open on a regular basis for visitors.

On the way back, don't miss a stop at the ice cream shop "Polarstern". You can enjoy the wonderful ice cream cups or take your ice cream to go.
The afternoon activity begins at the Neuer Kurpark, which is near to the hotel and already has a pre-booked electric carriage. Your own chauffeur will drive you comfortably along the spa promenade to the Comedy House and the Well Temple (Brunnentempel). You can sample the famed therapeutic water while admiring the view of the carpet bed. Opposite is the historic spa park, which includes the Wandelhalle. After the relaxing ride, there will be some movement: as the carriage waits, you will go for a short walk through the gorgeous spa park. In hot weather, the ice-cold water of the Kneipp system provides welcome relief.
Continue on the carriage through the attractive spa neighborhood to Elisabeth-Park. The journey concludes with a first glance at the castle and park Altenstein, which entices you to go on the expedition tomorrow.
After an adventurous day, the restaurant "Bierfein" will welcome you in the evening with excellent regional specialties and homemade Stupps beer from Thuringia's longest beer bar.
Still fit? Then attending an evening event at the Comedy House is ideal. The name is program, and whether it's comedy, cabaret, or satire, you'll be entertained! Tickets are available at the tourist information center.
Sunday
On the last day, you will travel to Altenstein Castle and Park via bus or automobile. Easy-to-walk walkways with various chairs go through the former summer palace of the dukes of Saxe-Meiningen, past gigantic trees and flowery carpet beds to the viewing platform with a panoramic view of the Werratal.
The explorer's bag, which you can borrow from the castle's tourist information or visitor centre, will keep you entertained for hours. The entire family assists the dragon Bruno in his search for his sister Viola, and as a result, they learn about the castle park through playing with an explorer card, binoculars, and magnifying glass. If you need more information, you can rent an audio guide, which is also available for children!
